Aside from the stunning landscape, one thing that is going for Boracay is its accessibility. This tropical paradise may be in one distant nook in the Visayas, but it is relatively easy to reach. No long hours of land travel, no bumpy roads, and no uncomfortable rides. Thanks to the increasingly organized system of transportation both in Caticlan and Kalibo.
The past few years have also seen several additional flights. Some airlines now offer direct flights from China, Korea and Singapore, bypassing Manila. They paved more ways for more tourists to easily set foot on one of the best island destinations in the world.
If you’re planning on making a splash in Boracay, here’s a step-by-step guide!
1. CHOOSE YOUR GATEWAY TO BORACAY: CATICLAN VS KALIBO.
There are two airports serving Boracay-bound passengers: One in Caticlan and the other in Kalibo. Before you book your flight, it is important that you be aware of the pros and cons of these airports.
Boracay International Airport -BIA-(Caticlan)- Located in the northwestern tip of Aklan, Caticlan is a barangay in the main island of Panay that is closest to Boracay.
•Travel time to Caticlan Jetty Port: 5 minute trike ride to Caticlan Jetty Port and 15 minutes by boat or ferry to Boracay island.
•Airport Capacity:-BIA is undergoing expansion by San Miguel Corporation, one of the biggest conglomerates in the Philippines, 1st phase of the expansion is to extend runway from 900m to 2,100m able to accommodate Airbus A320s flying from short haul asian routes, 2nd phase is the new terminal which will become the 3rd biggest airport terminal in the Philippines.
•Airfare: Tickets to Caticlan are much more expensive but will go down once the runway is completed and becomes operational by mid 2016.
Kalibo International Airport(KIA). Kalibo International Airport is in the capital city of Aklan.
•Travel time to Caticlan Jetty Port: 1.5 to 2 hours by van or bus. Then 15 minutes by ferry/boat to Boracay. Transportation is not a problem because there are plenty of Vans/Buses in Kalibo International Airport.
•Airport Capacity. It has a longer runway (2.3 km) that can be used by larger aircrafts.
•Airfare: Ticket prices to Kalibo International Airport are much cheaper than Boracay International Airport.
•Choosing between Boracay International Airport and Kalibo International Airport is easy. The question you need to ask yourself is: Do you have more money or more time? If the former, then go ahead, make your life easier, and book straight to Boracay International Airport. But for many of us who have a lot of time but always not enough money, Kalibo International Airport makes more sense.
